Just thought I would send a pic of my conch, Hoover, with a couple of pals. It seemed that everyone needed a bit of a back scrub.

    enjoy.

I adore this little guy. Sometimes it is like he is waving his trunk at me to say "hello". In fact when he did that at the LFS last week - i was hooked. He had to come home with me.

They really are cool critters, like a tiny elephant with eyestalks, a trunk and a shell. Mine doesnt move a lot, just vaccuums the sand and nearby rocks and of course his pals when they hop on for a cleanup job.

    glad you enjoyed!

Thank you - i do not believe he is a "fighting conch" - but a different variety instead. I almost swear the guy at the LFS mentioned "turtle conch". Others on the site may have conches as well. I just love their unique qualities! All i know is that the shy stage is over and he seems a bit inquisitive when I approach the tank to "talk" to everyone in my "fish tank voice".

(yes i talk to my fish and critters.....people talk to babies and puppies like that - right? so why not fish!)

If you get one, please let us all know!

Neat pics! It's actually a "Dog Conch," also known as a "Yellow Conch." I don't think they are imported for the hobby very often, as yours is the first one I've seen on the reef forums.

    Cheers,

    Don

As I think about it, some of the Strombus people have split Strombus (Laevistrombus) canarium into several species, subspecies, or forms, and one of them is S. (L.) turturella. That might be interpreted to be a "Turtle Conch," so that's probably the source of the LFS name:

    Laevistrombus turturella

    Cheers again,

    Don

Thanks so much for clearing that wee mystery up. I had spent a little time last week googling "turtle conch" but the results I got seemed lacking.

    +K to you :)
