ok trying to figure out why i can no longer seem to grow xenia after it thriving for 8 months and taking over. which i was happy with. i just love it.
Any way thinking back to when mine crashed.... gone in 3 days time. i had a heater issue, and i believe its when i started using carbon ( i dont think the brand matters)

i have heard it thrive in dirty water and in clean. soooooo??????
why cant i get it to grow in my tank again :( i know its a funny coral and its not really known why it does this. how long have you had it in your tank? do you run carbon? a skimmer? bio pellets?

I have no skimmer, i have 5 fish, nitrates are at 5ppm tops right now, heat is at 78-82, salinity is at 1.026..

I have pretty clean water, it dus not grow that fast but still is good.

    IMO xenia like "dirty" water.

It likes dirty water for sure, you will get more controlled growth with cleaner water, but it will go crazy in some nitrates(15-20ppm.))

ditto on the carbon pink4miss, that is when my 45 crashed, I thought it was lighting- I turned off the fluval 304 (which is basically a carbon/gfo filter and the tank is happy again.

This week end I am going to use the 304 and a new sump / skimmer set up I have- it will be very unique, it will use no overflow (not required), and will be dead silent. Nor can there ever be an over flow that spills on to your floor if the power goes out - stay tuned- I think this will work very well. I may just patent this design, in my garage it performs flawlessly.

I will name this thread- the "canister filter fights back".

hum well i have read GFO is tricky and to much to fast can cause a problem with corals

We always have 20 nitrates, ours doesn't go crazy. We just use a small carbon pad.

IME, 20 nitrates with elongata and pom pom for me in my previous tanks grew like a weed...Then with my new tank, i have been keeping nitrates under 5ppm and they are very controlled and slowly growing.
