My LFS has this wrasse labeled as a "filamentous wrasse". I've never heard of it and would like to get a proper ID for him before I buy. I have a feeling it is some kind of flasher wrasse, but want to be sure what type. I may be wrong though.

    So which is it?

Thanks for the link Atticus, I can't really tell from the picture though. The one in the store is really small, so I'm guessing that the liveaquaria picture is mature.

Does anyone know for sure? If it is the filamented, I'm going to go back to the store right now! lol It's $34.99 online!

Also, has anyone had any experience with these?

Hard to tell as both of the previous suggestions are similar in coloration and shape, with the fins on the mccosker being larger. The name the LFS was selling under is the link I posted. They are all peaceful reef safe fish that grow to the same size. All of them are 35-60 dollars in price.

I think it might be a carpenter flasher wrasse...would be easier to tell if we could see the whole top fin.

I think you can tell by the long skinny points on the dorsal fin. McCosker has one (see picture at left), Carpenter has three or four and filamented has several more.

Do they always have the long skinny points on their dorsal fin? I don't remember seeing any. I'm going to go back to the store tomorrow and check. I may end up coming home with him. :)

Either way, whichever of the 3 it is, would it be fine in my tank? I have a purple firefish, neon goby, and Randall's shrimp goby. I checked the compatibility charts and everything seemed fine, I just want to double check. ::)

I'll have to look tomorrow. Thanks KC, :)

P.S. What do you think about your flasher wrasse? :)

She is awesome! Very cute, full of personality, very bold, quite feisty. She is not shy at all, like some flashers can be. A lot of fun!

Oh, and definitely a lid is needed with this fish!

Whatever that wrasse is, it's a great price!
