    well thanks all. looks like i may just buy one instead. I dont have enough knowledge do it myself and dont want to burn the house down. but thanks for all the information.

    It's been a long time since I used colored Christmas lights, but if I remember correctly, the paint is on the outside of the bulb right? Aren't you worried that the paint will flake off and land in your tank? By the time you invest in the doorbell you could've had an LED setup that works very nicely. JMHO. ;)

    not worried about paint. was going to put it inside my PC fixture that is covered with a plexiglass to protect the bulbs and finish

    i agree about LED looking at Ebay right now
