for a while my daylight bulb had burnt out and i was just running the 420nm actinic bulb and the coraline seemed to grow much better.

but keep in mind it is not the coraline on the rock that you want/need it is the bacteria on or in the rock

Coraline grows much better under low intensity lighting, and specially actinics.

Also, from the other question above, it is generally a good idea not to run lighting at all during the cycle. Cuts down on a lot of the algae. Once you start to come out of the cycle, run only the actinics to get good coraline started. Then, after the cycle, open everything up full bore ;)

yeah, only run actinics if anything at all. otherwise you are just wasting your bulbs and raising your electric bill. all you are doing in the cycle is letting the bacteria find a balance. you'll have plenty of time for the coraline to grow later on.
