    Sometimes.

If the rock is cured and nothing dies when you put the new live rock in you should be ok.

I have found it to be a lot less risky to just put base rock in after the tank is established. No risk of causing a cycle, no bad hitch hikers, and it is a lot cheaper.

    You have 3 options

1, There are dangers of having the ammonia, nitrates and nitrites building up again, but you can help by rinsing off and cleaning the rocks before you add them (with tank water of course).

    2. Place the rocks in a bucket for a few weeks whilst constantly changing 50 % of the water every other day.

    3. Get Kent rock prep

You can add little rocks here and there overtime without worrying about the buildup of harmful matters, just dont go overboard.
