which one??

I got a brand new HOT magnum canister filter 250 by marineland for free. I currently have a tetra EX70 on my 36 bowfront. Would the canister be better to run? There both hob filters.

 

You could run both. One as a mechanical filter and the other as a chemical filter. Make sure you clean them often and thoroughly with a reef.

Is a fuge needed for a 36 gallon? I'm still learning as I go. The 55 gallon I'm setting up is going to have a nice sump and the red sea tank I'm getting already comes with it so that makes it easy.

 

With the bio-load in that tank, yes you could use a fuge. Is it a MUST? I don't think it is but it will help out a lot.
