I love my finnex heater, a little more expensive but comes with a digital display, and seems very reliable, one downside is they are a little pricey, but well worth the extra

Well it depends on how much money you are willing to spend. If it is a budget tank, I'd go with a regular heater "stick" or two and just cross your fingers that they won't fry the tank. I think Eheim makes some good ones. Also, you can get two lower wattage heater sticks, that way if one decides to go rogue, it will take longer for it to cook your tank and give you time to catch the problem. Otherwise, I have a Ranco ETC hooked up to a titanium heating element. It is a commercial grade controller and can run up to 1000 watts. This has been very reliable for me over the years and can be had for around $100 total.

Ebo Jager all the way, love their heaters. However, no matter what heater you decide if you want to foolproof it, get a controller like the Apex Jr. it will make sure that you'll never have a tank crash from over/under heating.
