what the easy way to go from base to live rock

    i have a bunch unlive rock [now its base rock but was once live rock] out of one of my old tanks and buddys old tank. what is the best way to cure it out side of a tank?

    big rubbermade tub or trash can, toss it all in, put in a powerhead and a heater and keep it dark

    It'll turn to live rock after a good cycle

    do i need to some tank water or already cured live rock? just to start the cycle?

    You will need to add salt water (new or from your tank). You will also need something that produces ammonia to start the cycle.

    Buy a few lbs of LR to throw in with it. Will speed up cycle and help populate old rock with bacteria and other "critters"

    If it were me I'd nuke it first to make sure you don't have any unwanted algae spores on there (especially since some was out of a tank other than yours) and just use a piece of your current LR to help establish it.

    At least you'll know exactly what's going into your tank...

    there is no question that i am going to nuke it. my rock has been sitting outside for a while...and its not all mine. i just wasnt positive my method would work, but looks like it will.
