    Where is a good location for it? I currently have it on the sand bed. Does it need to be on a rock formation to continue growing it's calcification skeleton onto?

    Leave it on the sand. No it will build its skeleton while on the sand. Many corals will send out sweepers if they sense a coral within their preferred space.
