To me you would have to go by the fish with the most volume.

By length is a bad way IMO because it doesn't take into account the width.

Weight is a bad way IMO because the question was biggest fish, not heaviest.

Surface area doesn't work for me because fish are different shapes. Some shapes have more surface area while the fish is actually smaller and weighs less.

The easiest way to measure the volume of a fish would be to put it inside a container of water and see how much it raises the water level.

:inquisitiSometimes I wonder why I even signed up to this forum:loco:......:D

Right now all we can really do is judge it by "look at how big that thing is" size. Just plain massiveness.

What about going out and cathing one of these bad boys?

They have a bunch of arapaima at the dallas world aquarium.. they're huge.

According to wikipedia some sturgeon can far exceed the size of a mekong catfish but both are some times part saltwater fish.. Wiki says the mekong catfish is widely recognized as the largest freshwater fish.

the problem with sturgeons, besides being saltwater too, is do they really reach that size anymore or are they just killed before that.

You should also take into consideration what a "fish" is. I wouldn't think a stingray would be considered fish, but you may.
