My refractometer seems to be broken. It's 5 to 6 years old. I can calibrate it, then use the same calibrating solution on it right away again and it's off from where I calibrated it from. I can test my tank water and it would read 1.021 (which it's not) then test the tank water again right away and it reads 1.024.

I think the time has come to get something new. So what do you fellow reefers use to check your SG.

35pt calibration fluid and a refractometer.
On mine, I found that using 0tds water and setting it at 0, isn't as accurate as using the 35 and setting it at 35 (1.0265). I know the scale should be the same, but it's not on my refractometer.
I believe it's a lower quality model made by 'ATC'

Possibly the most used, best piece of equipment I own. I seriously don't know why I didn't buy one sooner.

I use the Milwaukee digital one as well. I absolutely love it. so easy to use with no guessing at levels. Just tells you what it is. Obvious a little more money

H2 Ocean refractometer calibrated at 35pt. There was an interesting post about getting different readings based upon the light used to look through the refractometer however I don't think this would account for your swings that seem so severe. Sounds like time for a new purchase.

I recently calibrated my refractometer and it would not adjust to the correct level. The set screw adjustment was goofed up. Decided to purchase a new one. I think it was just worn out from use.
