I have seen some info that touches on this but I thought I would bring it all together. There are some sea animals that complement the efforts of those of us who like to overload and thus have less than pure virginal and wholesome white-glove waters. Tidbits of this I’ve come across in several postings, so I ask an biologist (not an ichthyologist) about it.

Someone touched on xenia liking less than perfect water. This is true because they feed on organics in the water. Organics like nitrate. Yes, they absorb nitrate almost as well as many plants. Clams do this also, even better than xenia. As do clove polyps he says. This is a great argument for getting that clam you want !!!!

I have had a small piece of xenia (4") for about a month now. Before I got it my nitrates were always measurable but less than 10. I can no longer measure them and I added an RBTA with the xenia.

    Thots, comments??

We need to do some research to find other sea life that can assist us.
