Sounds like you have too much flow going to it. What size tank, overflow, and return pump do you have?

Have you bled all the air out of the siphon tube?

Is you out flow from the outer box open and flowing freely?

Its a 56 gallon tank. Not sure what size overflow or return pump is but the pump in huge.. And its only a medium sized overflow.. I tried turning everything off and removing water from the sump and when it filled up the return side I turned the pump on and it emptied out quick and made airmail in the tank...

do you have a ball or gate valve on the output of the return pump? it sounds like your return is too large and needs to be dialed back to get the flow right.

I think that will be your best bet right now, replumb the return line to include a ball valve or gate valve. so you can restrict the flow from the pump and see how that helps.

What's the rating of your overflow box?
What's the rating of your return pump?

You have to make sure overflow box rating always > return pump.
    For example, a 300GPH pump needs a overflow box > 300GPH

Or DIY a second U tube to increase the overflow box rating?

Are you sure you have the overflow box adjusted correctly? Most of them are adjustable for the tank water level. You may have it to low in the water.
