Depends on how often. I use to own a 46gal tank where I did 5 gallon water changes every other week. With figuring in your rock and substrate, you do lose some gallons but I aimed for between a 20-25% water change every month. Something in that realm would not be bad, but you could go as high as 50% water changed every month. Depends on the sensitivity of your tank mates and their needs.

    Just my recommendations:

Reef tank I would change 10% - 4 Gallons each week
    (for your tank)
    FOWLR - 10% - 4 Gallons every other week

Best to do small water changes weekly to help reduce nutrients, dillute dissolved organics, tannins, toxins etc. and also replace those buffers, major and trace elements lost through fish respiration, carbon dosing and filtration(skimmer etc.).
    5 gallons or so, IMO...
