    I agree with this statement if you are talking about a 8 foot or longer tank. With a minimal length tank, the load will spread much more evenly than you would think. For a 65 gallon, you will have no more compression on one side than the other. But on a 300 gallon, you could be right.

    The most I have ever seen as far as compacting the foam is maybe 1/8 of an inch.The only uneven weight in your tank would be the live rock.I would never have a tank without the foam except as has been stated on a very large tank.

    The thing is the tank bottom is flat and the stand may not be. The foam is there to absorb the inconsistencies that may be there.
