It is a dry heat, yeah right !
How old was the sand bed?

If you are doing a complete restart I would use new sand since it's such a small tank and not a huge expense relative to tank stuff.

With that said you can simply remove it and wash it and reseed it. You can also dry the rock rinse and recycle it.

    Good Luck

    +1 to ^^^

Rock and sand can be cleaned and reused.

sand bed is several years old.
i was kinda hoping i could just wash it and reseed a portion of it. i have a new bag of live aragonite about 15lbs.
could i just use make up the rest of the sand bed of the washed old aragonite?
if yes, what the best way to clean it?

Just rinse until the water is clear.

Sand for your tank wouldn't be that expensive I would just go with all new live sand so you know it's safe!::)
