"Super Suckers" Slurp Invasive Algae Off Reefs

    National Geographic News

"...Biologists are employing a rather unusual solution: underwater vacuum cleaners.

The cleaners—called Super Suckers—suck up tons of gorilla ogo, invasive algae that are killing coral reefs, smothering sea grass beds, and fouling beaches in Hawaii..."

("gorilla ogo" - one thing more to worry about getting in tank :p )

Yep, seems to me they are fighting a losing battle.

What really gets me is that this stuff was introduced to Hawaiian waters intentionally. It apparently is a good source of agar.

Once again mankind shoots self in foot.

    Maybe a needed "curse"...

    Scientists: Seaweed could stem warming

By JOSEPH COLEMAN, Associated Press Writer
Sun Dec 9, 4:17 PM ET

BALI, Indonesia - "Slimy, green and unsightly, seaweed and algae are among the humblest of plants. "

"...A group of scientists at a climate conference in Bali say they could also be a potent weapon against global warming, capable of sucking damaging carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere at rates comparable to the mightiest rain forests.

"The ocean's role is neglected because we can't see the vegetation," said Chung Ik-kyo, a South Korean environmental scientist. "But under the sea, there is a lot of seaweed and sea grass that can take up carbon dioxide"..."

Actually, studies show that rain forest cutting slowed down considerably...

I don't see the really nice naturally gathered corals in LFS much anymore, like there used to be just a couple short years ago.

Don't know if demand is less because of so much aquacultured stuff, or because it is just so much harder and more expensive to get to get. :-/
