Anyone heard of them?
I found a new 48" - 8 bulb unit for $200 (without bulbs).
Where did you find them?
They are made by SLS the people who make Tek and the Maristar and other fine lighting. SLS is owned by National Garden Wholesale... many of their products are many for horticulture, such as the sun blaze. It is explictly stated NOT FOR USE AROUND AQUARIUMS but as long as you have it up over the tank enough you will be fine.
The deal is it has no splash shield and no ability to have one.
Essentially it is a Tek for people that grow plants.... legal ones.....
I am looking to upgrade my lights and I have decided on either an 8 bulb T5 fixture like this or 2 250wMH retro kit.
If I go with MH's I am thinking about upgrading to 2 retro 250 MH's at 14k or 20k, disassembling my two PC fixtures and self mounting the four actinic bulbs, two along the front and two along the rear.
My lights are mounted 12" above the water, in a custom built wood canopy with three fans mounted in the back, two blowing out and one blowing in.
I keep the ambient temp around 72 all year. My water temp is currently at 77 and does not get above 80 or below 75.
Do you think the heat would be too much with the MH's in the canopy? I do not want to get a chiller if I can avoid it.
Guitarman89 - I saw the fixture on Premium Aquatics web page.
I would do either personally.. Well I would ditch the PCs entirely but to use as dawn/dusk it won't be a big deal, you will just need to replace them frequently.
If you do the 250s I would take them closer to the water...12" is alittle far, I would shoot for say 8".
As long as you keep those fans running I would imagine your temp should be alright.
Your 'fuge should also help with evaporative cooling.
