finishing up some of my piping on sump would like to know how far should my return pipes enter the tank it's 3/4" pvc one on each end. Thinking maybe one inch below water line that way not much would go back into sump not that would be a problem 55 gal sump just don't want to see those pipes. Has anybody ever painted thier pipes going into tank???

To vary the flow you could have one retun at one level and the other return at another. Then just below the water surface drill a small hole in the PVC. Dill the hole on an angle \ that way if there is a power failure the small hole will brake the syphon and then the depth of the PVC in the water doesn't matter.

BTW I wouldn't paint anything going into the tank.

I used purple PVC primer to paint my returns. It is safe to use in an aquarium.

My return only is half way submerged in the water. This does two things - hardly draws any water into the sump before air breaks the siphon and creates a lot of O[sub]2[/sub] exchange with the surface agitation. FWIW.

I was thinking the same thing keeping return just over the water level so you can't see it.
