I have a Blue Mandarin in my 29g. I want to give him a female and was wondering recommended set up.
bump. i also want to breed flagtail pipefish any other recommendations
Buy a larger tank. Unless you are willing to breed pods (this is not always as easy as it sounds because it is time consuming and crashes can occur) purchasing them will quickly deplete your bank account. If you can get ORA Mandarins or are lucky enough to have one that eats prepared foods you will increase you chances of keeping them alive. Some members have had good luck training them to eat Nutramar Ova. With that being said I still believe a large mature tank is necessary for these fish and prepared foods should be used as a supplement not as a substitute for live pods.
i have weaned him using matt pendersons method and he is happy in my 29 gallon i was more wondering on how to set up a growout system
You may want to try MOFIB.com - there are a few people over there that are breeding them.
I don't know of anyone in North America doing this. It's a lot harder evan than breeding pelagic fry seahorses.
Sorry, I should have been more specific and said that there were no hobbyists doing so.
There is a big difference between a marine biologist with everything needed at his disposal, and a hobbyist.
Hyperboy on Nano-Reef is doing it.
He should let people on seahorse.org know then as there are a lot of hobbyists looking for true captive bred ones.
