I used a 14 gallon rubbermaid tub with 1 bag of dark reef sand and it was not very deep.
This was recommended by LFS and has worked good so far as I have to trim the grape algae very week. I also have some junk LR in it. Another LFS is willing to give me buckets of live rock chips that had broken off and if you can get the same I would use the sand and then put the chips on top of that.

I have about 3" of sand in my refugium and four fist sized pieces of live rock. It is just getting started, but things are looking good with a loy of biodiversity. I would add live rock rubble, as Nautilus suggested, in a heart beat as this is the perfect habitat for amphipods and copepods.

I was planning on using about an 1 1/2" to 2" of natural coral sand its 100% calcium carb. and what they call a grade 3 size. And another 2" of live natures ocean sand on top. how does this sound Craig ?

Perfect NUGIO! Just what the doctor ordered. 4 1/2" is right in the 4 - 6" range recommended for a DSB.

Would it be possible to mix some MM w/LS? Or would that just make a mess?

MM is very expensive and I suggest you try live sand and research before making the investment. You can always change in the future.

I know folks who have had great success w/MM.
