I am trying to decide if I am going to place sand in my refugium. What are the pros and cons of sand or bare bottom? I plan on only having cheato at first and see if that handles the load. I will then re-evaluate the water and go from there.

sand might be a place for scavengers to live and eat detritus that gets sent i there. but a couple snails would be just as happy in a bare bottom tank.

sand is probably necessary for alot of macros, but you only want chaeto so skip that point.::)

you can have a dsb that will absorb nitrates, but so will chaeto so skip that ::)::)

unless i forgot something, id say it doesnt matter unless you have rooting macros;D

    I'd do a 3-4" sand bed.
    Here's mine:
