you can get lots of types of sand, very fine, very coarse, crushed coral, crushed coral and sand, white sand, normal brown sand, black sand, black and white sand. it all depends on what you want really. black sand always looks different and cool.

I'd def steer clear of crushed coral, period, and sugar fine sand if you're going to have a lot of flow.

What are your plans for the tank, fish, corals, inverts etc?

yes crushed coral sucks, although if you are to have burrowing fish such as jawfish, it helps to throw in a small bag of crushed coral with some coarser sand to ensure that their burrow never collapses in onto them. this will most likely kill them.

Planning on hardy corals, mushroom and a couple small fish.

i would do 1-2mm aragonite. mixing sand sizes is pointless, it separates over time.

yeah, I'd just go get some dry sand(aragonite) from lowes or reef cleaners.org about 35 pounds for about a 2" bed and then buy a cup or 2 of live sand from your LFS!
