I use both inline and hand held. Inline is a great indicator while hand held is needed for many other test locations. My inline and hand held match consistently, but your mileage may vary.

I have two different hand held, both are models listed here.

Your water temperature and air temperature must be very close. Thats pretty rare.

So I got my meter in the mail. Tap water is reading at 88ppm and my RO/DI water is reading at 4 ppm. Is that good enough?

88 is pretty good TDS in tap water, the national average is around 250 today.
Since you have no idea what that 88 is made up of we can only guess ate the overall quality though but chances are it is good.

You need three TDS readings to troubleshoot a RO/DI system, tap water TDS, RO only TDS before the DI and final RO/DI TDS. If you are seeing 4 from the final RO/DI your DI resin is exhausted for sure but we need to know what your RO only TDS is to determine the membrane condition, it could be your culprit.

I am going to make some fresh RO/DI water this week and take new readings (including an RO only reading). I will let you know what they are and get suggestions then. Thanks for the help.

So I made some more RO/DI water today. Tap water was 89 and the RO/DI output was 0. This time I output the water directly into a clean glass jar and took the reading. Last time I was taking the reading out of my 5 gallon buckets where it had been sitting for a week. I guess the buckets were a little dirty. Are you guys vigilant about cleaning your water storage containers? Can I assume my membrane and cartridges are OK so long as I get the zero reading?
