I live in a very rural area and the TDS in my tap water is usually between 45-54. I say usually cause it varies greatly. With all the money I have invested in my tank, I wouldn't take the chance on tap water. For the little bit of money it costs for an RO or RO/DI unit I don't understand why anyone would gamble with it.

If using tap water works for you, then more power to you. Continue to use it if you want. But to me this is similar to smoking. No issues if you smoke yourself, but if you tell others to smoke, you are out of your mind IMO. And just because somebody can smoke for 80 years and live until they are 102 doesn't mean that anyone else could get away with it.

Could I use 1g containers of distilled water for now then get an RO unit later?

started using RO/DI water to replenish my 60g tank (used tap water before), after couple days, algae started peeling off the pumps and LR.

Yep... just like when you posted on a 3-year-old thread, it got 'bumped' back up onto the "Home" and "New Posts" pages so your question could be answered. :D

It might be good to mix a batch with yout tap water and test for nitrates and phosphates before filling your 150 with it.Your tap water might not be as reef tank friendly as some other towns.
