My friend wants to take hermit crabs from south bay long island to put in his reef tank. He said he would put them in a quarentine tank first, but are they completely reef safe? Would there be any dangers to putting them in a reef tank?
    Thanks

They are not tropical species and will most likely die.

Is it legal to do that?

I think he would be taking a big risk thats probably not even worth it, plus they are coldwater, unless he's doing a tank based on the area.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Big investment in time and money to risk on hermit crabs, I do not care how long they are QT'd for.

    Ok Thanks
He said he will not do it, simply because it is not worth the risk.

No way of knowing if they are "reef-safe"...you would be giving them access to many food sources they don't have in their normal environment.

The biggest issue, as already mentioned, is you would be adding an animal from a temperate zone to a tropical environment...if that doesn't kill them it will likely severally shorten their life span.
