Just received my new refractometer and all I can say is WOW.
I can not believe my eyes so retested and calibrated it again and came up with same info.
When using a swing arm deep 6 SG hand held the reading was 1.023.
With the refractometer it reads 1.026
I wonder how I got along without this device for so long.
I will never ever use those hand helds again.
    Thanks J man.

I just got mine on Fri from premium aqutics for $50.Looks like a sturdy unit.

Naut the instructions say to use distilled water can I use RO or does it have to be distilled?

I went and bought a gallon of distilled water because that is what they called for and I didn't want to mess with the calibration. It was already calibrated though as I did not have to change a thing on mine.
That is where I got mine from (Premium Aquatics) Is yours the blue one?
Whats your SG reading right now?
    These are great ain't they!:D

Yeah its the same one you got. You could say you" inspired" me to finally purchase one.
initial reading using swing was 1.023
    Refract reading was 1.028 !
Im going to get some distilled the re test ill get back w/results

Wow 1.028. If correct or the same after you get the distilled water then you may have saved thousands and thousands of critters in you reef. :D

Just so you guys know, these refracts like most of this type, are calibrated at the factory to NaCl, Sodium Chloride. The scale is not a seawater scale but a NaCl scale, which is different than a seawater scale. When you zero in RO/DI water, you are just bringing it back to zero for NaCl. Since seawater has a higher refractive index than NaCl, this refract, like most ( even if it says NSW), is 1 unit to low or .001. SG SG units, so to get the salinity of NSW it needs to read 1 point higher or .001 so 1.027 = 35 ppt NSW and not 1.026 .
