Today I was admiring my tank when I realized one of my clowfish was missing. I was looking all over for him when I finally found him in the overflow. I lowered it and he promptly swam out. When lowering the overflow I found 5 pieces (about a 1/2 in. long) of this dark red, rock shaped, mushy stuff. I poked it and it was firm, but kind of slimy too. What is this stuff? I have absolutely NO IDEA???????

It looks like a type of sponge.

That would be my only guess.

    Should I take it out?
    It is blocking the intake.

Probably, as it will continue to grow.

If that's a removable cover, I'd take it out to remove the sponge. Exposure to air will kill it, so any fragments you miss will be far less likely to regrow.

OK. The cover is not removable, but I will take out what I can.
    Thanks, Mr. Bill 8)
