My reef tank has a major problem with red algae, it's starting to cover everything! Is this a water chem. or lighting problem. I do tend to leave the lights on a lot.
My water is perfectly clear but the surface areas of everything is becoming covered. My snails are mowing away but can't keep up!

Since no one has responded yet I'll go ahead. I'm still very new at this, 3.5 mos.

I had some red slime showing up . They called it cyano. Everyone told me to increase my water flow so I placed to power heads inside the tank and that pretty much has taken care of the red and the green that I was getting.

I would think that if you had your lights on excessively that would also promote the growth. Mine start coming on at 2:30 and go off at 10:30.

The first thing that most of them will ask you here is "what are your water paramaters?" So check out your nitrates, phosphates, etc. Maybe even your temp.

We'll let the pros step in now.

    Good Luck,

    Cindiy
