    Data recently released by the National Marine Fisheries Service indicates that during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, the U.S. pelagic long-line fleets destroyed or threw away incidental by-catch including 11,823 swordfish, 1,345 bluefin tuna, 34,611 sharks, 611 blue marlin, 744 white marlin, 321 sailfish and 300 turtles (loggerheads, leatherbacks and Kemp Ridleys).
