How would one tell if a clam was generally healthy?

If it has good color, a good light reflex meaning it contracts when you put your hand over it or the lights go dim or brighter. See if its growing, I look for the "whiter" part of the shell just below the mantle. The bad part is they take a while to die, so it may seem fine, but be slowly deteriorating.
