So my parents are setting up a 36 gallon freshwater planted tank and need some help. They want to keep this as simple as possible so no CO2 tanks or anything like that for now. Basically what I want to know is what's the best way to go about this setup as far as lights, substrate, etc. It's strange, I can tell someone exactly how to set up a reef tank but not a fresh tank. Any help is appreciated.

well if they want to grow whatever type of plants, then regular NO bulbs wont be that great. get a 4 bulb t5 fixture, 2x6500k 2x10k for bulbs. sand or gravel substrate. I like sand. add water and plant fertilzer every once in a while. and get 1 small powerhead. and some community fish / cuc. good to go. easy.

I would do T5's. Less power consumption, longer bulb life, and the bulbs are cheaper to replace. PC's will do fine to but you get none of those advantages. T5's more than make up for the price difference in the first 6 months.
