I just noticed the other day that on a piece of rock that I have had for a year there is a bit of green hair algea (not much) and then these two sticks sticking out of the top with purplish/burgundy balls on top. Any idea what these things are?

    Thanks for any help,
    Marianne

The ball on a stick might be red slime algae (cyanobacteria). Some of the slime masses that I had looked like stalactites with bubble tips.
