Hey all I'm considering building a 55 gallon plywood aquarium because it seems like a low cost alternative to an acrylic one. What im concerned about is how long they last. If built well will they last forever. I am very good with wood and building stuff so I don't really see it as a challenge to build.

at 55g you will spend more building a plywood tank than purchasing one from a retailer. Untill you start getting up to around 200g its not a great cost savings.

+1 When people use plywood, they go BIG. I'm talking usually 300+ gallons. When you factor in the costs of all of the sheets of plywood, screws, and liquid rubber (which is quite expensive), you'll end up spending way much more than if you were to buy one pre-built. Petco has a dollar per gallon sale every few months, so a 55 gallon would be $55.

They only honor that up to 40 gal IIRC. I would check craigslist or local reef forum though. Usually you can find a 55 setup for dirt cheap.
