Flourish excel is a great product..from what I have heard you get nearly the same growth as with CO2. What size is your tank?

Buy a high quality substrate for the FW tank. Aquariumplants.com has an excellent substrate IME. They are also an excellent source for plants. You will want to get a very good light fixture like a T5HO or LED fixture. Use 5000K to 12000K bulbs getting a mix is a good way to go. You will want at least a 2 bulb T5HO fixture if not 4 bulbs. Not sure on the LED but lighting close to reef level is good for planted tanks.
