I spray painted the back of my current 125- black.
It has since covered almost entirely in coraline and algae.
It's looks and has done OK.

But for my 180- I'm think'n a deep blue, or even a PURPLE!

    Thoughts?

    Corailine purple would be cool.

You could paint the back pink and purple spots and just scrape the glass and not worry about it. Get some fake corals too while your at it ;D j/k I have not seen purple, I've done dark blue and it looks okay, although, once the coraline starts forming, you tend not to see it. Purple, may be okay, it would be interesting to see I guess. I always preferred painting a piece of acrylic and sticking it to that back, rater than the glass itself. Then if you don't like it, it is easy to swap out...

Is this just for aesthetic reasons or does it benefit the tank in any way?

Purely aesthetic. I painted the back of my 55 and 46 black, but did window tint on my 125. Figured it would be easier to take off if I ever didn't like it. Came out only ok, as there were a couple bubbles I could not get rid of. Overall pretty happy with the result.

where have you been m2434?? Long time no post! Or if you've been posting, I've missed them. Your idea is actually a very good one! Purple does sound interesting Todd......I would try the acrylic idea or perhaps another removable option? Can you get plastic sheets in that color and then if you don't like it, you don't have to re-paint it.

I picked up a sheet of dark blue acrylic for my back drop. This way I can change it out if I end up not liking it. :)

The purple sounds interesting. I guess it will depend on the shade.

I can see Todd shopping for purple paint like in the commercial. "I want purple not PURPLE."

    Thanks all

I may very well try the waterproof sheet idea.

    Or just paint- who knows.

    I normally don't scrape/clean the back.
