I think you would be fine going with the eshopp pf300 I don't think I would go any bigger for a 20 gal refugium and as for a pump I would definitely look more into a mag 7, at 4' of head it would be putting out 480 gph which u can always tune down and at 5' it will give u about 420 just my opinion :D

I don't have the money for a mag pump. The rio 2100 at 692 GPH would give me 375 GPH with a 4ft head

i personally have the eshopps pf300, and my return pump from my sump is a pentair quiet one 2200, that gives 581gph and its more than enough! now i would really recommend you to install ball valves

Just to clarify for you: it's not a matter of the pump keeping up with the overflow, it's a matter of the overflow being able to handle what your pump puts out....since if the water isn't there then it can't flow out.
If your pump puts out more than your overflow can handle then you'll need a valve to restrict the flow.
I'd go with a higher rating than you think you need for your overflow so later if you decide you need more flow through your sump you have the extra GPH capacity to do so.

skyfire, the next size up on the eshopp is the 800 GPH one. I think that would be to much flow running through my refugium. I see your point with putting a ball valve on the return pump to slow it down. But I can't slow the overflow box down from 800 GPH
