Hi, I introduced myself in the "hello" forum. Very quickly I had asked opinions about whether doing a Red Sea Max 130D or setting up a 55 gallon. All opinions were for the 55 gal. Which means I need to start from scratch. I had a 65 gallon set up a couple years ago. One of the things that drove me crazy with my 65 was the overflow box, the standard Eshopps overflow. When the siphon broke; sucking on the aquarium airline in the U tubes to start it again. I was doing some looking and found in Dr. Fosters & Smith a continuous siphon overflow that is run by a small pump. Anyone ever heard of this? OR have any thoughts on the overflow other than the box with U tubes? The 55 does not have a built in overflow unfortunately. Someone gave me the 55.

Thoughts and idea's would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Agreed, much easier and no worries about broken siphons

You can add an aqualift pump to your current overflow for like $10

Make sure you get a check valve though. Lee's Check Valve at PETCO

How do I know if it's tempered glass? A friend gave me the tank and I think it's an older 55 also, where would I drill? I'd need to know what do.

I've never did anything like that before. I was rather proud of my self for the plumbing I did on my 65 but, clueless on the drilling part. :)

You have to figure out what brand you have and when it was manufactured

That is why I suggested the Aqualifter pump aqualifter pump - Google Search

Some of the older and newer 55's are tempered front, side's and bottom, don't have a clue as to why but they are.

I used aqualift pump and a Continuous Siphon Overflow from Aquatraders for almost a year with out a single problem.
All you have to do is occasionally clean out the lines to the aqualifter because the tend to get a bit clogged.

Here is a link to Aqueon's tank Specification page.
