I have cleaned the pH probe every 4 - 6 months and check the accuracy (chemical test kit) monthly. However, when the pH probe started failing and drifting badly, I blamed the poor accuracy of the chemical test kit and trusted the pH probe. We killed a few things when I started "chasing pH"....

I am considering the purchase of a Hanna pH/ORP combo hand held tester to cross check the probes in the tank and get an idea as to how often the probes need to be cleaned and the controller recalibrated....thinking that I would trust the Hanna instrument to remain accurate and cal. check it at the same time as the tank probes...

Must of been between beers. :)
Well with a Nano or 20g tank I would suppose not. Get into the larger tanks and it is a must to have something to control all the stuff.
