I have been at 1ppm ammonia for a couple days now.I added one and only to my 80 gallon bare bottom build last Friday.I have added the ammonia from dr tims 3 times now.I have not dosed it for the last 3 days.Nitrites have always been 0.Today for the first time I got a small nitrate reading. What gives? If it matters I'm using dry rock. Also does the bacteria need light to work?

The bacteria do not need light to work and generally prefer the lights off.

As for nitrate - I am not sure I understand. You would expect to see nitrate because the ammonia to converted to nitrite which is converted to nitrate. Since you have little ammonia or nitrite the ammonia you added has to nitrate. You are probably using an API nitrate test kit? They and many others don't read nitrate values under 10 - 15 mg/L nitrate ion very well.

What ammonia kit are you using - API?
