I took my daughter today to the science museum in Pittsburgh. they had 4 salt water tanks. 3 of them are connected with tubes and i saw fish swimming from 1 to another. the sand bed is no thinner than 8" deep in some cases over a foot. here are the pics.

That first one looks disgusting. lol. I understand the concept a a DSB, but is there a benefit to having it say, 1 foot deep, opposed to 6"?

donno. ive seen a lot better looking tanks. but the first 1 was supposed to be a copy of the shallow area of the ocean where lots of macro algae grow and this pic does not give this tank any justice. it is filled with anemones and some kind of jelly fish with heads on the sand and tentacles upward. it is about 6 feet deep and toward the back there is 4 trees (or plants) growing about 8 feet tall.

DSB can look better by having a cover over the front and sides on the tank to hide the actual depth on the sand. Just showing an inch or so looks better

I know, I was just commenting. Is the extra sand bed depth just for looks to model the environment or is there an extra benefit to the very DSB?
