We recently got 10 acres in a new development (it's actually in the Sam Houston Park - thick and wooded :))

We plan to start building in Jan.

Anyway, we have our own forum there too. Conversation came up about solicitors. The example was the dude that drives a pickup selling steak out of the back - I'm sure you've seen them.

So folks wanted to put up a "No Soliciting" sign at the front of entrance (a futile gesture IMO).

    Anyway, I said:

I'd only support "no solicitors" if we equally don't allow kids to sell school/scout/whatever junk. It's equally as annoying to me (yes, I am a parent). I don't understand why the guy trying to make a living can't work but the kid selling junk food for their school/troop is OK. Seems backwards to me...

(backwards in the sense I need meat, I don't need a high calorie caramel cookie though!)

Well, this really irked some folks. (My current HOA for example doesn't allow solicitors but makes an exception for scouts, which I find discriminatory based on age)

So I'd like my friends at 3reef opinions on the subject and perhaps help me word my position more eloquently. Apparently people assume I am being hostile (I've noticed it here too, I guess I come across that way).

I'm being labeled anti-kid, which I find ridiculous. I don't want to buy your kids cookies, I already have to buy my kids cookies, and my nephews, and my nieces, etc ad infinitum.

    What's your take?

    I completely agree with you.

I don't find you hostile, but then again I am a sarcastic ass.

I would only allow solicitors that live in the neighborhood.

BTW, will they include trick-or-treating kids in the solicitor grouping? Technically they are also solicitors.

the qualifications in the legal proffession seem to be lowering
you used to have to study for years and pass all sorts of exams
now all you do is dress up as Winnie the Pooh, scrounge some candy
and your qualified as a solicitor

I think they can see the difference in the two concepts.

If they ban meat... they should ban cookies.

I agree with you. I find any door to door selling / soliciting irritating, actually.
