Newb with splitting mushroom coral

I purchased my first coral a few days ago. I was hesitant about adding coral to my tank because i was unsure my light fixture was strong enough (two bulb t five fixture, ten gal nano, 12 in deep). The coral seems to be healthy. I saw in the store that the piece was about to split, and now its definitely splitting in half. Its funny to watch my clownfish watching this, he seems very interested... I wish i could post pics, but for some reason i cant...
Does this mean my system can support soft corals? would it still be splitting if it wasnt "comfortable"?
