Hello Folks- I just got a new bucket of Reef Crystals and the calcium is 495. Other parameters are:
    SG: 1.0255
    Ph: 8.2 (API)
    Alk: 10 (API)
    Ca: 495 ( tested twice: 490 & 500, salifert)
    Mg: 1365 ( Red Sea)

    My current DT params:
    SG: 1.025
    Ph:8.0
    Nitrate: 5
    Phos: .02
    Alk: 10
    Ca: 450-460
    Mg: 1360

I have two questions: 1) is this within the normal range of variation for reef crystals? 2) should I try to correct Alk & Mg to a compatible range? Any other thoughts?
    Thanks in advance...

+1^^ I agree, although on the high side for calcium, everything looks acceptable to me.

Calcium is a little high if that indeed is an accurate reading.Test kits can be wrong and still give consistent results.Iwould check it against another kit or a lfs. As long as the calcium is not precipitating it should be fine.RC batch testing is very good.

MY CA from corallife test around 500 with ReadSea and API. Really unless you do a large water change than it wont make much of an impact on your system.

Thanks for the responses. I guess what I'm concerned about is the sudden bump in chemistry that comes with a water change. I generally add the new water over a period of a few hours to let the critters acclimate. I guess I'll just wait to see what the perams measure after the water change.

To add to the other great replies, did you stir the bucket before opening? Sometimes components will settle during shipping, which can cause high or low parameters as well as inconsistency between batches. Rolling it on the floor for a few minutes does the trick for me. :)

Unless it's a crazy high.. I just look at it as free Calcium :)
Even if you're doing a 50% water change it's only going to move from 460 to 480.

Good question Mr Bill, I left it in the back of the car rolling around for a day while I was driving around. Then when I got it home rolled it up and down the driveway a couple times. Does that sound about right?
