I've had this guy for about 5 years or more. He came from the LFS where I was working. I ended up bringing him home as he was pretty much on death's door. He went into my 75 FOWLR and did very well growing back his spines. He survived the tank crash when all the other inhabitants died when a return pump polluted the tank with oil. I did away with that tank and the urchin was relugated to the sump of the 210. After breaking down the 210 recently, he is now residing in the tidal pool. He seems happy as a clam....or an urchin!

That is one lucky urchin in my opinion!

Urchins are normally good water indicators as they will deteriorate rather quickly once water parameters begin to slide negatively!!!! For your urchin to remain alive and recover full-circle while the other inhabitants have died is a remarkable accomplishment!

That is a very cool story and I do agree with CR. I also have one (but not nearly as pretty as ours) and I sometimes think its more of a pain in da azz than good. This thing knocks over LR, corals....etc etc. But I guess I'll keep it anyways.;D

I'm thinking that the pump was a Little Giant....I'm not sure though as I threw it away. I do know that it was oil filled though and I'd never go that route again!!!

The best urchin for a reef tank is the Black Diadema Long Spine Urchin as they are not as cumbersome and are more forgiving as far as knocking things over!!!!!
