What effect does switching to black sand have on light absorption and reflection? I would imagine that having white sand would increase the overall light reflection in the tank, making it a much more efficient substrate for growing coral. The darker the color, the more light absorption that occurs.... just a thought.

you are exactly right Phayes, in fact, if i did not have MH i dont know if i would be able to keep the monti i have alive. if you really plan on doing a bunch of sps's i would not reccomend black sand.
