    Carlson's Surges are really simple

This one uses a vent connected to a needle valve to control the bleed air in the main drain tube. This allows you to discard the siphon assist tube and elimate some of the bubble inheriant to the design.

You could do a 16oz surge...That would be crazy.

Interesting.....You would think that a surge on a 1000 gallon reef tank would get more comments???

Provides flow. When you build reef tanks that are 1k or bigger you have to start coming up with creative methods of flow. It gets really expensive at that point to use Tunze's or Vortechs. The surge is probably one of the more accurate methods. Its really random and chaotic. The only drawback to the Carlson design is the bubbles. But in this cause the tank owner likes them. So all is well.

Maybe I ought to open up a build thread for the tank or something. I already have a build thread on another forum here fingerlakesreef.com ::

Thanks for taking the time to explain... You learn by asking..... I appreciate it... I'll be checking out your tank thread tomorrow... take care. Sounds like a good idea to me.. Lots of people would like to see the work that goes into a tank that big....
