The sea surrounding the remote Pacific atoll of Midway is vivid turquoise, the sky a deep blue. At first sight it is a paradise, a nature reserve for two million laysan albatrosses. But then you look again. Where there ought to be pristine beach, there is rubbish. Tons of it. Rope, shampoo bottles, computer casings, plastic sheeting, fragments of artificial white and blue

    That's so sad......

I really don't understand people who claim "recycling does nothing; we won't run out of plastic, so who cares?". It's more than just whether we'll have "enough plastic for our lifetime", and things like this illustrate that plastic doesn't disintegrate, dissolve or dissipate like most of the other "garbage" people have.

What a shame we are so disconnected from the consequences of our actions.

Of course we are. It's pretty much scientifically proven that people have a limit as to how many other people they can have steady relationships with that numbers in the hundreds; imagining going across New Jersey by foot and knowing the terrain is insane; imagine something happening literally tens of thousands of miles away because you throw away a plastic bottle.
