I'm building a 30"x12"x24" 40 gallon reef tank. I plan on putting LPS and SPS corals in it. I've done some research on the 120W chinese dimmable LEDs, and right now I'm leaning toward this fixture, but do I need one or two? I have a 12" hood where I will be placing it.

1 should be perfect for a 40g. I am planing on doing a 40B next month for a frag tank.

yea it will be good. People put 2 of them on 75 or 90s and do fine. So 1 should be plenty on a 40gal.

I am leaning towards the reef breeder rgb for my 40gal breeder coral tank. Just because the diff colors will make the corals pop more! and also it has bridgelux leds which are a pretty reputable brand. not sure what leds are in the taotronics fixtures.

awesome info. looking at rapid led, might build a 24 led setup, would that be enough for lps in a breeder?

I mean, honestly will probably be more expensive, and have less watts. With the fixture i linked to you could grow basically any and all corals. And with the multiple color leds your tank will look amazing. But i have heard great things about rapidled dont get me wrong. I am not an expert on leds but i think that might be enough, depends on how many watt per led.

My non dimmables (2 of the TT 120W's) do well on my 125long.

All my corals are doing well and thriving!

I wish I would have got the dimmable ones to bring out the blue a little more, but Oh well.

24led rapidled set up will be roughly 280. thats for 120watts dimmable

that light is 165 watts for 199, but back ordered. plus no DIY value.

seems like a great deal though

Watts are essentially a meaningless value when it comes to coral these days. When you looked at the DIY, did you include the heat sink and dimmable accesories? in your estimate? 24 bulbs seems a little light, but I honestly have no idea. DIY comes with Cree diodes, which are top of the line they say, but I hear Bridgelux is good too. I like the idea of diy, its just a little out of my price range for a first time led unit. The rgb unit will arrive in roughly 2.5 weeks from order, according to the guys email.
